Enough

The session beer — any session beer, the whole category — is an argument against the tyranny of more. More alcohol, more hops, more everything, the relentless escalation of craft beer's adolescence giving way slowly to the maturity of enough. Enough flavor. Enough ABV to signal intention without declaring war on the evening. Enough beer to stay at the table for the whole conversation without losing the thread of it somewhere around the third round. The session beer is what happens when a brewer decides that the drinker's experience over the course of an entire evening matters more than the first dramatic impression. This is wisdom. This is craft in its most considered form. This is also, in July, just good sense.

Fourteen Seconds

Neil DeGrasse Tyson once pointed out that if you compressed the entire history of the universe into a single calendar year, with the Big Bang on January Ist, all of recorded human history would occupy the last fourteen seconds of December 31st. Craft beer, in this cosmological timeline, would appear sometime in the last fraction of the last second — a brief, improbable, gloriously specific flowering of human attention applied to fermentation. And yet in those fourteen seconds we built the pyramids, wrote the Iliad, invented calculus, put a man on the moon, and dry-hopped an IPA with an experimental variety from New Zealand that tasted like passionfruit and changed someone's understanding of what beer could be. Fourteen seconds. We have not wasted them.
